What is TAE?

TAE is an abbreviation for Thinking At the Edge, and it is a way of thinking co-developed by Eugene Gendlin and Mary Hendlicks. Procedures are made up of preface and 14 steps and in Folio volume 19 (pp12-24). Now, you can browse both English and Japanese Versions (Translated by Tadayuki Murasato) of the Website, The Focusing Institute(http://www.focusing.org) . Also the Tokumaru and Kida co-translated version is included in 『QUALITATIVE RESEARCH WITH TAE STEPS- THINKING AT THE EDGE : Theory and Applications』.

At the preface, Gendlin explains “THINGKING AT THE EDGE” is a systematic way to articulate in new terms something which needs to be said but is at first only an inchoate “bodily sense” . TAE is a method for giving expressions to something you can’t explain but you are sure what it is like(something meaningful or feeling sensation). In other words, TAE is the method for verbalizing experiences from lessons.

TAE follows method illustrated below; it proposes formats at first to felt sense, and secondly it responds to them. This cycle produces Word or Term, which is tangible, from felt sense(feeling sensation), which is intangible. Word/Term is one of the formats. Instruction of the form is also one of them.

TAE extracts experienced lessons systematically. By following the instruction and filling out the form, felt sense, an experienced lesson, gradually changes into “Word” or “Term”. *Numbers in blanks are TAE Step’s numbers which made by Contriver of TAE, Gendlin

※In () is the number of TAE step of inventor Gendlin.
